Gulf University Launches its First Edition of Sustainability Week on 20 October 2024.
Wide Participation from Governmental and Private Sectors to Support Sustainability in Line with Bahrain Vision 2030
Professor Mohanad Al-Mashhadani, President of Gulf University, has announced the launch of the first edition of “Sustainability Week” at the university, set to take place from October 20 to 24 of the current year, at the university campus in Sanad. The event embodies Gulf University’s commitment to Bahrain’s Vision 2030, which prioritizes sustainability across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The week-long event will feature broad participation from governmental, private, and non-governmental entities that support sustainability, contributing to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting environmental awareness.
The event will include participants from several ministries and governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Health, the Supreme Council of Health, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs, and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Prominent figures from the private sector, including representatives from “Enova Green,” “Kanoo Group,” and “STC Bahrain,” will also be present, alongside private healthcare institutions. The goal is to unite efforts across sectors to discuss best practices in sustainability and strengthen collective action towards achieving global goals under the umbrella of Gulf University.
Professor Al-Mashhadani highlighted the importance of Sustainability Week, stating that this event reinforces the university’s commitment to Bahrain’s Vision 2030, which places sustainability at the forefront of its priorities on economic, social, and environmental levels. Al-Mashhadani, “At Gulf University, sound and concrete steps are taken toward building a sustainable, eco-friendly community, which enhances our role as a leading educational institution in sustainability and innovation.”
Additionally, Al-Mashhadani announced that the university will dedicate the first 10 minutes of each class during Sustainability Week to discussing sustainability-related topics to raise students’ awareness of critical environmental issues.
Dr. Omar Blibech, Head of the Sustainability Week Organizing Committee and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Gulf University emphasized that Sustainability Week provides an important platform for exchanging ideas and experiences on the environmental and economic challenges facing society. He added, “This event reflects Gulf University’s leading role in supporting sustainability and achieving environmental and social goals on both local and regional levels.”
Dr. Blibech further explained that the week of the event will feature a variety of activities, including interactive workshops on energy conservation, recycling, and waste management. There will also be panel discussions with local and international experts addressing challenges faced towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Arabian Gulf region.
In addition, the event will include environmental exhibitions showcasing the latest green initiatives aimed to raise awareness about biodiversity and environmental preservation.
Sustainability Week’s final day will commemorate this initiative with a an activity including all participants in planting trees around the university campus and surrounding areas, to further promote and mark the importance of environmental preservation and increasing green spaces in urban areas; workshops on sustainable living and healthy eating, focusing on local and sustainable food sources, will also be held.
Dr. Blibech, concluded by stating, “Gulf University’s Sustainability Week is a significant step towards enhancing collaboration across sectors in Bahrain to achieve sustainability goals in line with Bahrain Vision 2030. The vision aims to build a green, sustainable economy driven by innovation and environmental awareness.”
